Harmony attacker transfers stolen Ether worth $44 million

The FBI and two blockchain tracing and analysis firms are partners with Harmony, as per the project’s developers.

According to blockchain data, the attacker responsible for last week’s $100 million Harmony network hack began transferring funds worth millions of dollars in cryptocurrency last night.

The movement is recognized by Harmony, and the project’s developers are working with blockchain analysis firms and the Federal Investigation Bureau (FBI) to identify the attacker. Tokens, stablecoins, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) could all be exchanged between the Harmony, Binance Smart Chain (BSC), and Ethereum blockchains using the “Horizon” bridge that was attacked.

The “Horizon Bridge Exploiter” exploiter wallet moved nearly 36,000 ether, or over $44 million, in the last 26 hours, as per blockchain statistics.

The attacker transferred more than 18,000 ether, which was currently worth over $22 million, to three wallets on Monday. The three wallets had lately held only a small amount of ether when the coins were moved to Tornado Cash.

The attacker sent an additional 18,000 ether to another wallet on Tuesday during Asian hours. Approximately 6,000 ether were then transferred from there to another “0x89f89d61644c6e606efb25a01210159f102fbd8b” wallet.

According to blockchain data, the amount was then transferred in chunks of 100 ether each to the privacy swap service Tornado Cash. Currently, Tornado Cash has processed over 1,200 ether worth slightly more than $1.4 million.

The on-chain connection between a source and a destination address is severed by Tornado Cash. This enables hackers and exploiters to conceal their addresses while withdrawing funds illegally acquired.

By early European hours on Tuesday, the primary exploiter wallet still had more than 49,000 ether, or more than $59 million. Over the past 24 hours, the cost of the native ONE token of Harmony has dropped by over 9% to 2 cents.
